We have come across some interesting questions that have been repeatedly asked. Therefore, we thought it might be a good idea to post these questions in a separate thread.
We will update this FAQ as we receive new questions.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
Q: What is Starfleet 1701st: The Starfleet Uniform Club?
The Starfleet 1701st is a club with a simple purpose, namely to encourage Star Trek fans to have uniforms made that look professional and, when assembled with other Starfleet 1701st members, will all look consistent and "uniform" in their uniforms as if they stepped off the Paramount Star Trek soundstage: no more varying shades of color, no more incorrect accessories; and especially, no more ill-fitting outfits!
Q: How do I join?
Please email your interest to join the Starfleet 1701st. Copy/paste the following "SF1701st Membership Form/Questionnaire":
Starfleet 1701st Membership Form
"*" - Required
*First name, Middile Initial:
*Your SF1701st Forum Username:
*Date of birth (for demographics)
Do you belong to a Star Trek club? If so, what club/chapter do you belong to? And what rank do you hold?
*What Uniform are you most interested in? (TOS is the "official" uniform of the club though not required, but you may complete membership in the uniform you are most interested in).
What rank will you display on your uniform?
Please email your interest to join with the above membership form to:
Steve Thomas "vadmsct[at]lycos.com"
Attn: Starfleet 1701st Membership
Just replace "[at]" (written like this here to avoid searchbots from harvesting e-mail addresses) with "@". Keep in mind that joining this forum does NOT automatically make you an SF1701st member! You have to specifically ask to join!
Q: How much does it cost to join?
Nothing, nada, zilch, nichts, rien! The Starfleet 1701st is a non-profit club and currently does not charge dues. However, to avoid advertisement pop-ups and placements on this board, we do encourage you to make a donation!
Q: I would like to help. What can I do?
You can help the club to find sources for our uniforms. We need tailors familiar with Trek/sci-fi costumes who would be willing to be added to our list as Starfleet 1701st-approved tailors. They must know how to work from a pattern as well as modify the pattern as necessary. We also need you to scour your area's fabric shops to help us in our on-going quest to find the most accurate fabric as possible.
You may also possess talents that can help the club! Do you sew, make patterns, draw, work with props/models, work with CG graphics, have media experience, etc.? Please let us know!
Q: I cannot contribute a lot. Can I still join?
Of course! If you join and become a member you commit yourself to wearing SF1701st-approved material cut from SF1701st-approved patterns. It is that simple. We also ask you to spread the words about Starfleet 1701st and let everyone know about us.
Q: I have an actual Star Trek uniform. How can I help?
You are heaven-sent! Please help us gather all the information that will allow us to truly have the most accurate and precise uniform possible! Take pictures, document details, and engage yourself in our forum to help out your fellow members!
Q: I am only interested in the TOS/TWOK/TNG/FC etc. uniform. Can I still join?
Absolutely! The Starfleet 1701st is a "Star Trek Uniform Club". If we have an approved pattern for your uniform choice and the sources available to complete your uniform, then you can wear any uniform from any Trek era! Right now, we are working on the TOS uniform as the official uniform of the Starfleet 1701st! Other uniforms will follow depending on popularity, likely The Wrath of Khan (TWOK) and First Contact/Nemesis (FC/NEM) uniforms. That is one reason we included the questionnaire in the membership letter what your uniform choice was. So please do not forget to fill out that part!
Q: But I spent $$$$ dollars on a great uniform. Will it pass?
Unless your sources are SF1701st-approved, it will not be acceptable. However, if you have another uniform choice, we do encourage you to look into having that uniform made for the Starfleet 1701st's gatherings. Remember, our aim is to be "uniform" in our uniforms!
Q: How about the Enterprise uniforms created by the German Star Trek Club?
Those are SF1701st-approved. However, they are no longer selling them at this time
Q: I have used or found a great-looking fabric for my uniform. Can I use it?
This has to be answered on an individual basis. Please post on the forums. Sometimes, the fabric you found is only locally and seasonally available, but we need to find a source that we can rely on also in the future.
Q: What other benefits than "looking good" do I get as a member?
After having your uniform made, the only other activity is that we get together and have fun at conventions, Trek gatherings, and more. You can also encourage fans in your area to join and start your own "chapter" of the Starfleet 1701st! As long as you stay true to the (pending) Starfleet 1701st charter/by-laws, and have fun, you can pretty much do as you wish! We are planning on discounted deals with vendors as well.
Q: What about a website?
For now, this board acts as the Starfleet 1701st "website", although a formal website is still desired.
Q: How much will the uniforms cost and why does it take so long get going?
We are trying to find resources and will use our membership numbers as a leverage to work out good deals. Please refer to the forums for the latest updates.
Q: Who are your Quartermasters?
If you have questions about a particular era(s) of Star Trek uniforms, please post in the appropriate forum or PM (private message) the Quartermaster. Our current SF1701st Quartermasters for each specific Star Trek era:
TOS/Props: "Phase Pistol" (Karl Tate)
TWOK: "Navmidn" (John Froehlich)
NEM: "NavMidn" (John Froehlich)
Other staff positions are open at this time. They are:
Personnel Officer (SF1701st Membership)
Public Relations Officer
